About Labeeba Shafique
When Labeeba Binte Shafique left her home in Bangladesh to come to the United States, she brought with her a determination to succeed. Born in 2001, her story from South Asia to becoming a distinguished scholar at Georgia Institute of Technology embodies what happens when talent meets perseverance.
Labeeba’s early life in Bangladesh fostered an early love for learning and curiosity about the world around her. An interest that would guide her through the years to come.
Educational Journey
Upon relocating to the United States, Labeeba enrolled at Georgia Highlands College (GHC) to pursue an Associate of Science Degree in General Studies. At GHC, Labeeba quickly established herself as more than just another bright student and was actively involved in various academic and extracurricular activities. Now at Georgia Institute of Technology, Labeeba continues to leverage her analytical bent and inborn leadership skills in forging solutions to multidisciplinary challenges.
Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society Involvement
At GHC, Labeeba was very active on campus with the Alpha Psi Omicron chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Honor Society. As Vice President of Chapter Events, she organized events to promote academic scholarship and engagement for members. It was an opportunity for her to build a more active and engaged community for her peers.
Labeeba is currently an active member of PTK. She always talks to other students about how they should join the honor society and be around people who are motivated. She considers this as life-changing and makes you think from a different perspective in general and as a learner.
Research Endeavors and Campus Engagement
Beyond her studies, Labeeba took an active role on campus. Since her first semester at GHC, she has worked with the Six Mile Post’s Student Spin Network, served as the Student Government Association President, and was an orientation leader during Welcome to Campus Day. She also worked with the Lake Allatoona Undergraduate Research group and Woman to Woman, which speaks of her passion for community and helping others.
Labeeba’s research passion is showcased in particular through two projects she has conducted. One of these projects, titled “Testing the Acid Content in Various Carbonated Beverages,” used acid-base titration methods to test the amount of acid in popular sodas.
This project highlights Labeeba’s analytical and scientifically curious mindset. It also sheds a broader light on society’s concern with the high acidic content found in different brands of carbonated beverages, especially when people are generally unaware of it.
Honors and Recognitions
Labeeba’s academic, research, and leadership work was recognized through various awards and honors. In 2023, she received the Outstanding Achievement in the Honors Program award at Georgia Highlands. The honor acknowledged her track record of superior honors work and engagement with the Program.
She was also awarded the Physical Science Award, a key honor at GHC that recognizes an outstanding student pursuing a career in an area of physical science and demonstrates academic excellence in multiple physical science courses.
Her other notable awards include the Coca-Cola Academic Team Bronze Scholar and Coca-Cola All-Georgia Academic Team membership. The former is a competitive program with a $1,000 scholarship and recognizes top-performing college students who exhibit academic excellence, leadership, and service outside the classroom.
Profession and Work Experience
Labeeba has a solid foundation in research and leadership, earned throughout her exemplary success in high school. Her ability to speak English and Arabic fluently and her analytical skills make her competitive in any work environment. As a Student Caller within the Georgia Tech Alumni Association, she liaises with alumni by cultivating relationships for university donations in support of its programs and scholarships.
Additionally, she is the Vice President of IfYoureReadingThis.org, tasked with financial oversight, fundraising development, event organization, and overall success. She collaborates with other members of the Executive Board, ambassadors, and stakeholders.
Her dedication to meaningful causes also translates into her role as a Research Assistant at Georgia Tech School of Materials Science and Engineering. Here, she works on pioneering research on organic photovoltaic cells by data-mining and extracting key performance indicators to improve power conversion efficiency.
